History-Central Virginia was the home of important native American confederations. After settled in 1607, Jamestown settlers explored up the James River to Richmond, but encountered our class IV rapids and returned to Jamestown. More European settlements developed along the James River and Richmond was incorporated as a city in 1742. RVA has a long history from colonial times, through the turbulence of the Civil War, one of the largest collections of Victorian row homes, and landmark achievements by its black community at the start of the 20th century. Today Richmond is a progressive, dynamic, and inclusive city steeped in history with a cutting edge vibe, a large art scene, thriving economy, and remarkable foodie and brewery scene.
