The emergency medicine residency at VCU was initially accredited in 1999, and has trained over 200 emergency physicians. VCU Medical Center provides an exceptional environment to learn. VCU Medical Center is a major referral center, level 1 adult and pediatric trauma center, the only burn center in Virginia, and a comprehensive stroke center. Residents also are exposed to many subspecialties of EM through the subspecialty training of our faculty, the Virginia Poison Center, event medicine, and our direction of prehospital ground and air agencies in Central Virginia. We have nationally known educators in emergency medicine, and a legacy of ground breaking resuscitation research.
Our Mission
Virginia Commonwealth University emergency medicine residency provides exceptional clinical training in an educational environment that supports and promotes inquiry, lifelong learning, scholarship, and equitable patient care. We aim to be leaders in educational innovation, and provide learners with opportunities that allow individual development in many domains of emergency medicine. VCU Health and VCU EM provide care to a large amount-of underserved and vulnerable patients, in addition to the promotion and provision of cutting edge discovery and patient care.
