Air Force Operational Medicine Program
VCU Emergency Medicine was a pioneer program in the Air Force Operational Medicine Training Program. We accept two residents a year from the military match that occurs in mid-December. Residents are active duty during their training, pay and benefits through the Air Force, and accumulate time in rank. VCU EM provides all the benefits other residents receive (CME, scrubs, etc). Resident are fully integrated into our program and provide a unique and valuable perspective while receiving outstanding training to serve their country.
Our goal is to continue a strong OEM program with multiple residents in each year group so that we can maximize your sense of belonging to both the VCU team but also the Air Force GME team!
Training at VCU
Air Force residents complete all the same clinical rotations with the following changes:
- EM2 Community Emergency Medicine is replaced by a rotation with the Air Force
- EM3 Elective – all or part may be repacked by a rotation with the Air Force
The Air Force rotations you complete during residency depend on your prior training. Most residents use the time during EM2 and EM3 year to obtain their flight surgeon “wings”. If you already have completed training then you will have an extra month of emergency medicine during EM2 year and will be able to choose an elective your EM3 year.
