EM Rotations
While in the ED, residents are scheduled for 18 ten hour shifts during each 4 week block. At VCU, each Adult EM block contains 1-2 Pediatric EM shifts. During vacation blocks, residents work 14 shifts in the block. Additional reductions occur for travel to conferences as a class that occur each year of training.
Electives
Residents are encouraged to pursue their individual interests and development during training. We offer a 2 week Selective in EM2, and a 4 week Elective in EM3. VCU GME will continue to pay salary and benefits for those who choose to do their elective away from VCU Health whether across Virginia, the country, or the world.
Critical Care
VCU Medical Center ED is a busy high acuity ED, with over 7000 resuscitations a year. Our state of the art resuscitation bay has 10 beds (can be doubled), and residents train on the best equipment during residency including intubating/NP scopes, CMAC, Glidoscope, ECMO, Therapeutic Hypothermia catheters, and more.
Tracks
We have over 15 longitudinal tracks that focus on areas of EM and healthcare to help our residents personal development as physicians. Each track has a faculty director, and specific curriculum lasting one year. Residents can elect to participate as an EM2 or and EM3, or both. Track participants are scheduled for one less shift for each EM block to dedicate to their pursuit.
